COVID-19 Home Cleaning Advice

With COVID-19 on the rise in Garden City and around the rest of the country, now more than ever before it’s essential to keep your house as clean and sanitary as possible. Epidemiologists believe that COVID-19 is spread not only through close contact with infected individuals, but also through contact with contaminated surfaces. In fact, many experts believe that COVID-19 is able to stay on surfaces for as long as nine days. In this blog post, we discuss several simple ways that you can keep your home safe from coronavirus.

At Sweet Serenity Homes in Garden City, we take COVID-19 seriously. We know that our customers’ lives are on the line, which is why we offer thorough deep cleaning services for residential and commercial properties. To learn more and schedule an appointment, reach out to our team today.

CLEANING VS. DISINFECTING

Many people do not realize that there are serious differences between cleaning and disinfecting. During the COVID-19 pandemic, both cleaning and disinfecting your environment is essential.

Cleaning refers to the physical removal of impurities, such as germs and dirt, from surfaces. Cleaning does not kill germs, but it does remove them, thereby lowering their number and the risk of spreading infection.

Disinfecting refers to the use of chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. Unlike cleaning, it does not physically remove the germs from surfaces. Because impurities such as germs and dirt can significantly inhibit the disinfectant’s ability to kill germs, it is essential to both clean and disinfect surfaces (in that order).

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

If you are unable to hire a deep cleaning service, such as Sweet Serenity Homes, or in-between appointments, it is important to routinely clean and disinfect all frequently touched surfaces in your home, such as tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, toilets, faucets, and sinks. You will also want to regularly clean your cell phone.

Make sure to wear disposable gloves and use soap and water and an EPA-registered household disinfectant. If disposable gloves are unavailable, just be sure to thoroughly wash your hands. If a disinfectant is unable, you can use a diluted bleach solution of 5 tablespoons bleach per gallon of water.

Be sure to also wear disposable gloves when handling dirt laundry and clean your hands immediately afterwards. Do not shake dirty laundry out as this may help spread the virus. Launder all items on the warmest appropriate setting, and clean and disinfect hampers as described above.
